A pan-European crackdown on the misselling of mobile phone services, such as ringtones and wallpapers, has led to more than 50 websites being closed and more than 150 being overhauled.

Italian regulators, meanwhile, have pursued the issue further, and imposed fines totalling around €2m ($2.9m; £1.76m) on nine companies operating there – including some big names players such as Telecom Italia, Vodafone and Wind.

The probe into mobile services websites was co-ordinated by the European Commission’s consumer directorate but carried out by national enforcement authorities across Europe.
